Microsoft Word for Mac is compatible with Mac OS 10.12 and above. Both options will require you to purchase an Office 365 subscription. especially the way Apple has been cranking out new releases in rapid-fire order before the previous release has been stabilized. In fact, it's digital certificate has expired, so it can't even be installed/updated on a Sierra box without temporarily setting back the system clock. There will be no more updates for it & it has not been updated since March of 2013 - more than 2 years before the release Office 2008 is discontinued & fully unsupported. I haven't done it myself, but I understand that typically there are significant issues.
